If you are from Kalamazoo, Michigan, you are probably familiar with the above question. The city whose name is often used to refer to a middle-of-nowhere place, or somewhere far away, is situated equidistantly between Detroit and Chicago. What more, it is not as desolate as you would expect, being the original home of Gibson Guitar Corporation and a mecca of American craft beer. So what is there to do in Kalamazoo? The city is home to unique displays of art and culture. On the first Friday of every month, the area is host to Art Hop, a free event where businesses and galleries display local art, and visitors "hop" from venue to venue. It is also the home of the Kalamazoo Animation Festival International, a top-20 animation festival in the world according to filmfestivals.com. What more, in 2014 Kalamazoo was ranked one of the country's best cities for work-life balance.
